Dress your Age - Or Not

Dressing your age doesn’t mean what it used to. There is a huge misconception in our culture that once women turn a certain age they are no longer interested in fashion. But women above 50 are of course still interested in fashion and beauty. They still want to look their best and express themselves with their clothing as they have done for their entire lives. In fact, once you have reached 60 you probably are more aware than ever about what types of clothes make you look at feel your best. You are at an age where you can finally be truly comfortable and confident in yourself. You finally truly know who you are deep down. It’s time to dress for that inner beauty and make it shine on the outside.

Embrace Your Age

There is no reason to dress as though you are younger than you are. Embrace your age, and dress for who you are. And no, this does not mean you have to dress in the way the culture presents you, but rather that you can feel confident dressing how you feel. This sentiment rings true for any generation. When mothers see their 12 year old girls dressing in clothing that would probably be better suited for when they reach 18, all they want to do is reach out and say ‘embrace your age!’ Hold onto that cute colorful t-shirt for as long as possible! The same goes for you today. If you try to dress in styles that would be more appropriate for someone much younger (short denim shorts or gaudy t-shirts, for example) it might become quite blatant that you are trying to dress for your younger self. This doesn’t have to mean giving up your personal style. If you dress in the same styles that 20-year-olds dress in, go for it! Do you and be yourself, but consider what you are really comfortable in. Don’t dress ‘younger’ to feel younger. If you dress appropriately for you age, in styles and items that make you feel like your most confident self, then people will see you for who you are and you will actually look younger. When you are dressed in clothing that embraces your age, your natural beauty will shine. Your clothing should highlight your other features, not be a distraction to who you are.

Classic Fashion

One of the biggest advantages of fashion in your 60s is that you have seen the highs and lows of every fashion trend out there. You know what was popular throughout your life and you know what worked for you versus what was best left behind. Now you have the freedom to comb through those trends and find the most classic styles that can work for you for a long time. It’s time to find timeless pieces that will flatter you at any age, and make you feel like the beautiful and elegant woman that you are. Our advice - ignore the latest fashion trend. As you know, it will disappear before your order shipment even arrives. You will look and feel better if you are finding clothing that feels as though it was designed just for you, rather than scanning the fashion magazines for the hot new trend. The key to mastering fashion over 60 is to find what is right for you as an individual.

Dress for Who You Are

Have you ever heard the saying ‘dress for the job you want’?  This saying goes for workplace dressing, and conveys the idea that you should be dressing in a way that commands respect and credibility, so that you can be the most sought out person in the office. The same goes for you today. Dress for the role you want in life. You have lived through so many different versions of yourself. People change, interests change, and style can change throughout it all. At this point, you probably know what really makes you happy and how you really enjoy spending your time. If you love to travel, incorporate pieces into your wardrobe from your travels. Everyone will love the stories you can share about where you purchased each item. If you love outdoor activities or sports, find a way to incorporate clothing into your wardrobe that will allow you to be active when you want to be. Think about what you love to do, and feel free to express that through your style.

Accessorize!

Accessories are the perfect compliment to every outfit. Everyone loves a good bracelet, necklace, or pair of earrings. You probably have your favorites of each, and they are one of the best ways to let your personality shine. Accessories often have valuable memories attached to them as well, whether it is a pair of earrings from a special trip, or a necklace you received for your wedding! These pieces never go out of style and can be tastefully incorporated into every outfit.

Style Icons

You can always look to a style icon for some added inspiration. Fashion icons never go out of style and they’re never too difficult to find! Fashion icons have dominated the media for years, and they remain style icons well into their later years. Next time you’re watching a TV show, movie, or flipping through a magazine, pay attention to what the older women are wearing. Of course, they likely have the very best personal stylists planning every outfit, but they can certainly be a great place to search for age-appropriate inspiration.
